German author Oskamp wins Dublin Literary Award

German author Katja Oskamp has won the 2023 Dublin Literary Award for Marzahn, Mon Amour (trans by Jo Heinrich, Peirene Press), reports the Bookseller.

Oskamp receives €75,000 (A$123,700) and Heinrich, as translator, receives €25,000 (A$41,200). The Dublin Literary Award is the world’s most valuable annual prize for a single work of fiction published in English.

Lord mayor of Dublin, Caroline Conroy, said: ‘Marzahn, Mon Amour is a warm, witty and moving portrait of older residents in Berlin, which offers the reader an insight into a community often overlooked.’

The winning work was chosen from a shortlist of six novels by writers from Croatia, Mexico, Germany, the US and Canada/Vietnam, and a longlist of 70 titles, which included several books by Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand authors.
