Ros, Zdung win Yoto Carnegie medals

In the UK, the winners of the Yoto Carnegie medals for writing and illustration for children and young people have been announced.

Welsh author Manon Steffan Ros won the Yoto Carnegie Medal for Writing for The Blue Book of Nebo (Firefly Press). Originally written in Welsh, and translated into English by Ros, The Blue Book of Nebo is the first book in translation to win the prize. Told through the dual narrative of a mother and son in post-apocalyptic Nebo, Ros’s book explores Welsh identity and culture.

Vietnamese illustrator Jeet Zdung won the Yoto Carnegie Medal for Illustration for Saving Sorya: Chang and the Sun Bear (Kingfisher), the second graphic novel in a row to win the award. Saving Sorya is written and inspired by Vietnamese wildlife conservationist Trang Nguyen, with manga-inspired illustrations which ‘work together to offer something new to discover on each re-reading’.

The Yoto Carnegie Medals are the UK’s longest-running book awards for children and young people, and are judged by a panel of children’s and youth librarians. Each winner receives £500 (A$940) worth of books to donate to a library of their choice, and a £5,000 (A$9400) cash prize. For more information about the awards, click here.
