Audiences return to Sydney and NT festivals, WA Prem’s award winners, BookPeople committee change

Sydney Writers’ Festival audiences returned to this year’s festival as a live event in larger than expected numbers, while NT Writers saw a box office record for its festival in Mparntwe/Alice Springs.

The winners of the 2023 Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards have been announced, and the shortlists for the 2023 Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards have been announced.

BookPeople, formerly the Australian Booksellers Association, has announced changes to its board. Australia Reads has announced a joint research project with the University of Melbourne, to investigate ‘the ways Australian authors connect with communities through live literature events—from author talks to workshops, performances and school visits’.

In the UK, the Publishers Association’s Year in Publishing Report for 2022 showed the export market was a ‘huge’ factor in last year’s industry growth, with an 8% rise in exports. The winners of the Yoto Carnegie medals for writing and illustration for children and young people have been announced. Simon & Schuster has received a buyout bid from investor Richard Hurowitz, with backing from Abu Dhabi sovereign investor Mubadala Investment Company.
