Mighty Blossom (Nicki Greenberg, Affirm)
Nicki Greenberg is one of Australia’s most versatile authors, whose work for young readers encompasses fiction, picture books, nonfiction, and critically acclaimed graphic novels. Mighty Blossom is her latest offering and is a wildly enjoyable picture book about how heroes can come in any size. Blossom is fearless. Blossom is fast. Blossom is fierce. And Blossom is determined to earn a place on her favourite football team. The coach is less convinced that little Blossom can hold her own against the whopping great Brushtails who make up the Mighty Fighting Possums, so they assign her to distribute the half-time oranges instead. But with a player down in the Grand Final, it’s finally Blossom’s time to shine. Can she win the cup? With energetic illustrations and rollicking rhyming text, Mighty Blossom is a terrific read-aloud for children aged 3+. Full of football references and a menagerie of familiar Australian animals, it’s a great book for young AFL aficionados, but a passion for Australian rules footy is certainly not a prerequisite for enjoying this hilarious and heartwarming story about the littlest legend in the league.
