APA Rising Star 2023 shortlist announced; BookUp program revealed

The Australian Publishers Association (APA) has announced the shortlist for the 2023 Rising Star award.

The five shortlisted professionals, who each began their publishing careers in the past 10 years, are:

  • Tom Langshaw, commissioning editor, Pantera Press
  • Kajal Narayan, head of marketing, Pantera Press
  • Genevieve Nelsson, deputy head of marketing and publicity, Bloomsbury
  • Kathleen (Katty) O’Neill, metadata manager, Hardie Grant Books/Explore
  • Eloise Plant, digital marketing manager, HQ Books/HarperCollins.

A panel of experts from publishing and related industries selected the shortlist. ‘It was so hard to choose the shortlist from such a stellar line-up of up-and-comers who are really having an impact across all areas of their businesses,’ said the judges. ‘All nominees should be recognised and commended for the value they bring to their businesses and our industry.

‘From editorial to metadata, marketing and publicity, we have an amazing group of innovators who are making real change in their areas of expertise and will prove to be leaders in their fields in years to come.’

The shortlistees will appear on a panel at the BookUp conference in Melbourne on 16 August, and the winner will be announced at a networking event at the Fringe Common Rooms following the conference.

The APA has also announced the full program for BookUp, its one-day industry conference for trade and educational publishing professionals, to be held at State Library Victoria and hosted by Meanjin editor Esther Anatolitis. The conference will feature keynotes from Think Different consulting firm director Greg Harbidge on design thinking and National AI Centre director Stela Solar on AI and publishing, as well as sessions exploring previously announced topics, including workplace culture and innovation, book pricing in a time of inflation, and publishing First Nations voices.
