Wakefield to publish First Nations anthology

Adelaide publisher Wakefield Press will publish an as yet untitled anthology of works by First Nations writers, supported by funding from the Australia Council for the Arts.

The anthology will be edited by Dominic Guerra, a Ngarrindjeri and Kaurna poet and writer who in 2021 was awarded the Oodgeroo Noonuccal Poetry Prize and whose work has been published in ArtlinkGrantaFine Print and Cordite Review, and Karen Wyld, an author of Martu descent, winner of the 2020 Dorothy Hewett Award for Where the Fruit Falls (UWAP) and author of the nonfiction children’s book Heroes, Rebels and Innovators: Inspiring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from history (Hachette).

‘Although not limited to South Australian storytellers, this anthology will showcase new and established First Nations creatives based in SA and neighbouring communities,’ said Wakefield. ‘Dominic and Karen envision that this collection will be a boundless chorus of profundity, intuity, and sovereignty, with works writing back to the archives, staunchly calling for justice, listening to ancestors or speaking to future kin.’

The editors are calling for submissions of new or previously published work from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in poetry, micro fiction, short stories and graphic stories, by 4 September 2023. For more information see the Wakefield website here.

The anthology will be published in early 2024.
