Our Country: Where History Happened (Mark Greenwood, illus Frané Lessac, Walker)
Our Country: Where History Happened is the second title by the creative duo Mark Greenwood and Frané Lessac. This nonfiction picture book contextualises the many different corners of Australia’s history for a young audience. It doesn’t shy away from the darker parts of our past but does so in a sensitive and age-appropriate manner while celebrating our history’s richness. The book starts by taking the reader back thousands of years to the ancient rock art found across Australia. It goes on to chart such pivotal events as European settlement, the discovery of gold, bushrangers, frontier resistance, Federation and Native Title, among others. The design has diverse elements that work for different reading abilities and interests, resulting in a layered book suitable for many ages. First, each historical moment is described in a simple yet lyrical sentence on each page then a paragraph provides a storyteller’s overview of the event. Finally, an additional paragraph gives further reference information to enhance the readers’ understanding of what happened. An illustrated timeline also provides an overview of some of the most important historical sites. Our Country: Where History Happened will make a perfect addition to primary school libraries, offering an excellent insight into the moments and cultures that have contributed to Australia’s vast history.
