Richell Prize 2023 longlist announced

The Emerging Writers’ Festival, Hachette Australia, and the Richell family have announced the 2023 longlist for the Richell Prize for emerging writers.

Selected from over 700 entries, the 20 longlisted writers are:

  • Ada Lester
  • Adele Rickerby
  • Alex Sawyer
  • Carrick Tomlin
  • Chamberlain Zhang
  • Eleanor Garran
  • Franklin Richards
  • Hannah Goldstein
  • Jessica Sousa Ornelas
  • Karen Johnson
  • Kathy Sharpe
  • Lucy Nelson
  • Luisa Mitchell
  • Madhukar Nallamani
  • Nick Gilpin
  • Olivia Dezilva
  • Shashini Gamage
  • Svetlana Sterlin
  • Tee Lindon
  • Victoria Manifold.

Entrants are judged on the first three chapters of their work, alongside a synopsis and a description of how the prize would benefit the author’s writing career. Writers do not need to have completed a full manuscript at the time of entry, but they must have the intention to complete their work.

The 2023 judging panel includes editor and writer Nadia Johansen, Lindy Jones from Abbey’s Bookshop, Book People’s David Parritt, Hachette Australia publisher Vanessa Radnidge, and author Hannah Richell.

The Richell Prize is awarded annually to an emerging writer of adult fiction or adult narrative nonfiction, in memory of former Hachette Australia CEO Matt Richell, who died in 2014.

The winner will receive $10,000 in prize money, as well as a 12-month mentorship with a Hachette Australia publisher. Hachette Australia has the first option to consider the winning and shortlisted works for publication.

Last year, Susannah Begbie won the Richell Prize for her manuscript ‘When Trees Fall Without Warning’. The novel has since been acquired by Hachette Australia and will publish in May 2024.

The 2023 shortlist will be announced on 10 October, and the winner will be revealed on 2 November.
