IBBY reveals change to Ena Noël Award
The Australian branch of the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) has announced a change to its IBBY Ena Noël Award, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the award’s inception.
The Ena Noël Award has previously been awarded annually to a young Australian emerging writer or illustrator under the age of 35 who has had a book published in the two years prior to the award closing date. The awards were established in 1994.
From next year, two biennial awards will be presented—one to an author and one to an illustrator. The change to the award structure is in recognition of the importance of visual literacy and the role that illustration plays in complementing the textual narrative in children’s and young people’s literature.
Ena Noël (1910–2003) was the founding president of IBBY Australia, a school teacher and an advocate for children’s literature and library services for children.
