Australian Political Book of the Year 2023 longlist revealed
Judges have announced the 2023 longlist for the Australian Political Book of the Year awards.
This year’s longlist includes ten titles:
- Dreamers and Schemers: A political history of Australia (Frank Bongiorno, La Trobe)
- Australia’s China Odyssey: From euphoria to fear (James Curran, NewSouth)
- The Queen Is Dead (Stan Grant, Fourth Estate)
- Lockdown (Chip Le Grand, Monash)
- Black Lives, White Law: Locked up and locked out in Australia (Russell Marks, La Trobe)
- Crossing the Line (Nick McKenzie, Hachette)
- Bulldozed: Scott Morrison’s fall and Anthony Albanese’s rise (Niki Savva, Scribe)
- Political Lives: Australian prime ministers and their biographers (Chris Wallace, UNSW Press)
- The Passion of Private White (Don Watson, Scribner)
- Trump’s Australia: How Trumpism changed Australia and the shocking consequences for us of a second term (Bruce Wolpe, A&U).
Introduced last year, the award recognises the books ‘the judges believe provide the most compelling contribution to understanding Australian political events and debates’. This year’s judging panel includes Laura Tingle, Barrie Cassidy and John Warhurst.
The shortlist will be announced in Melbourne on 12 October, and the winner will be revealed in Canberra on 25 October, with shortlisted authors to receive $1000 and the winner an increased prize of $15,000.
Last year’s winner was Dean Ashenden for Telling Tennant’s Story: The strange career of the great Australian Silence (Black Inc.).
