Inaugural Hope Prize seeks submissions

A new Australia-based international writing prize, The Hope Prize, is seeking ‘stories of hope, courage, and resilience’.

Fiction and nonfiction submissions between 2000 and 5000 words are sought, responding to any of the three themes of hope, courage and resilience. The prize is open to any adult writer from around the world, and organisers specifically encourage entries from emerging writers without prior publishing history.

The winning entry will receive a prize of $10,000, which is sponsored by Simon & Schuster Australia, while the second- and third-place prizes (sponsored jointly by Readings and The Hope Prize) are $2000 and $1000 respectively.

Simon & Schuster will publish an anthology of the winning and highly commended submissions in 2024, with all royalties to be donated to mental health charity Beyond Blue. The collection will be available in Australia and by print-on-demand internationally.

Prize judges are former governor general Quentin Bryce, author Tony Birch, former prime minister and Beyond Blue chair Julia Gillard, Readings chair Mark Rubbo, and Simon & Schuster Australia managing director Dan Ruffino.

Submissions close 22 March 2024. More information about the prize is available here.
