Nova’s Missing Masterpiece (Brooke Graham, illus Robin Tatlow-Lord, EK Books)
It’s Nova’s dad’s birthday, and she has made him a special masterpiece drawing as his present. It’s nearly time for the party, but she can’t find the drawing! (‘Where is it? Where is it?’) Nova (accompanied by her trusty pet dog, Harley) becomes increasingly distressed on the search for the artwork. Nova’s Missing Masterpiece is a relatable story about the frenzy of worry and frustration children (and adults!) can experience when something doesn’t go to plan. With clever repetition (‘but Nova’s missing masterpiece was nowhere to be found’) and engaging illustrations, Nova’s Missing Masterpiece is a likeable book. It’s also a good reminder of self-regulating techniques for kids to use in times of stress, such as slow belly breathing, drinking water, listening to music, stretching and relaxing (all modelled by the adorable Harley). Robin Tatlow-Lord’s illustrations are bold and detailed, with the fairy garden and cubby-house pages particularly appealing. There’s also the added fun of a treasure hunt/puzzle where the reader can look for some of Nova’s father’s favourite things (cupcakes/violins) included throughout the book. Perfect for children aged 3 and above, Brooke Graham’s Nova’s Missing Masterpiece is a valuable resource for parents and caregivers that might also have use in a clinical setting by psychologists and counsellors.
