UK volume sales of big names down on 2022

In the UK, volume sales of ‘big brands’ including Jamie Oliver, David Walliams and Richard Osman ‘have been suffering a contraction in their Christmas run-in hardback releases’, reports the Bookseller.

Oliver’s 5 Ingredients Mediterranean (Michael Joseph) has sold just under 129,000 copies, a drop of 45.2% in volume compared to the sale of the author’s One at the same point in 2022. Nonetheless, 5 Ingredients Mediterranean is still the fifth bestselling book of the UK autumn.

The Bookseller reported that just over 50 million units have been sold through Nielsen BookScan’s Total Consumer Market from the last week of August to the seven-day period ending 25 November, representing 4.6 million fewer copies than in 2022.

However, a jump in the average selling price means value totals have almost kept pace with last year. The UK book market’s volume sales for autumn have dropped 8% compared with 2022, with value down by 1%.
