All three of the Australian candidates were also nominated in the 2023, 2022 and 2021 shortlists, while Gavin Bishop was also nominated last year.

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award was created in 2002 by the Swedish government ‘to promote every child’s right to great stories’ and is awarded annually ‘to a person or organisation for their outstanding contribution to children’s and young adult literature’. The laureate receives a prize of five million Swedish kronor (A$729,888).

This year, a total of 245 candidates from 68 countries and regions were nominated. UK creators received the highest total nominations (18), with creators from Sweden (12), the US (10), Iran (9) and Norway (9) also receiving high numbers of nominations. The full list is available on the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award website.
