In the US, the American Library Association (ALA) has announced the winners of its Youth Media Awards, including the Newbery and Caldecott medals and the Printz award, reports Publishers Weekly (PW).

Vashti Harrison has won the 2024 Randolph Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished picture book for children, for Big (Little, Brown, ed by Farrin Jacobs), becoming the first Black woman to win the award, according to PW. And The Collectors: Stories, compiled by A S King (Dutton, ed by Andrew Karre), has won the 2024 Michael L Printz Award for excellence in literature written for young adults.

In The Eyes and the Impossible, a dog unwittingly becomes a hero to other animals in a story about friendship and liberation. And The Collectors gathers nine short stories by prominent young adult writers about remarkable people and their strange and surprising collections.

The Youth Media Awards were announced on 22 January, during the American Library Association’s LibLearnXconference. The full list of winners and honour books in each category of the awards is available on the ALA website.
