International Booker Prize 2024 longlist

The longlist for the 2024 International Booker Prize, worth £50,000 (A$96,900), has been announced.

The titles in the running for this year’s prize are:

  • Crooked Plow (Itamar Vieira Junior, trans by Johnny Lorenz, Verso)
  • The Details (Ia Genberg, trans by Kira Josefsson, Wildfire Books).
  • A Dictator Calls (Ismail Kadare, trans by John Hodgson, Harvill Secker)
  • The House on Via Gemito (Domenico Starnone, trans by Oonagh Stransky, Europa Editions)
  • Kairos (Jenny Erpenbeck, trans by Michael Hofmann, Granta)
  • Lost on Me (Veronica Raimo, trans by Leah Janeczko, Virago)
  • Mater 2–10 (Hwang Sok-yong, trans by Sora Kim-Russell & Youngjae Josephine Bae, Scribe)
  • Not a River (Selva Almada, trans by Annie McKermott, Charco Press)
  • The Silver Bone (Andrey Kurkov, trans by Boris Dralyuk, MacLehose Press)
  • Simpatía (Rodrigo Blanco Calderón, trans by Noel Hernández González & Daniel Hahn, Seven Stories Press)
  • Undiscovered (Gabriela Wiener, trans by Julia Sanches, Pushkin Press)
  • What I’d Rather Not Think About (Jente Posthuma, trans by Sarah Timmer Harvey, Scribe)
  • White Nights (Urszula Honek, trans by Kate Webster, MTO Press).

A shortlist of six books will be announced on 9 April, with the winning title to be announced at a ceremony on 21 May.

The International Booker Prize is awarded to a book translated into English. The prize money is shared equally between the winning writer and translator, and each shortlisted writer and translator also receives £2500 (A$4845) each.

The winner of the 2023 prize was Time Shelter (Georgi Gospodinov, trans by Angela Rodel, Weidenfeld & Nicolson).
