Carnegie Medal 2024 shortlists announced
In the UK, the 2024 shortlists for the Carnegie Medal for Illustration (previously known as the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration) and the Carnegie Medal for Writing have been announced.
The books shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal for Illustration are:
- The Tree and the River (Aaron Becker, Walker Books)
- April’s Garden (illus by Catalina Echeverri, written by Isla McGuckin, Graffeg)
- Lost (Mariajo Ilustrajo, Quarto)
- The Wilderness (Steve McCarthy, Walker Books)
- To the Other Side (Erika Meza, Hodder Children’s Books)
- The Midnight Panther (Poonam Mistry, Bonnier)
- The Bowerbird (illus by Catherine Rayner, written by Julia Donaldson, Macmillan Children’s Books)
- The Search for the Giant Arctic Jellyfish (Chloe Savage, Walker Books).
As previously reported by Books+Publishing, Australian author and illustrator Bob Graham was also longlisted for the illustration award for The Concrete Garden (Walker Books), which was among several Australian works nominated for this year’s Carnegie Medals.

- The Door of No Return (Kwame Alexander, Andersen Press)
- The Song Walker (Zillah Bethell, Usborne)
- Away with Words (Sophie Cameron, Little Tiger)
- The Boy Lost in the Maze (Joseph Coelho, illus by Kate Milner, Otter-Barry Books)
- Choose Love (Nicola Davies, illus by Petr Horáček, Graffeg)
- Crossing the Line (Tia Fisher, Hotkey)
- Safiyyah’s War (Hiba Noor Khan, Andersen Press)
- Steady for This (Nathanael Lessore, Bonnier).
The Carnegie Medal for Writing is awarded to a book written in English for children and young people that sparks an outstanding reading experience. The Carnegie Medal for Illustration celebrates an outstanding reading experience through illustration.
The shortlists for the 2024 Carnegies were announced at the London Book Fair on 13 March. The winners’ ceremony will be held on 20 June. The winners will each receive a specially commissioned golden medal and a £5000 (A$9663) cash prize.
