Varuna announces Roderick Centre Fellowship for Regional and Remote Writers

Varuna, The National Writers’ House has announced a new fellowship program—the Roderick Centre Fellowship for Regional and Remote Writers.

Described by Varuna as ‘the only national literary program in Australia specifically for regional and remote writers’, the fellowship program is open to emerging and established creative writers living in regional and remote areas in Australia, with one place reserved for a First Nations writer and at least two places to be awarded to writers from regional Queensland.

The fellowship is presented in partnership with the newly established Roderick Centre for Australian Literature and Creative Writing at James Cook University, and is open to writers creating new work in literary fiction, genre fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels, young adult fiction, junior fiction, poetry, or writing for screen, theatre or radio.

The 2024/25 program will include nine fellowships, three of which will be in person, with the other six to take place virtually. In-person fellowships will include a two-week residency at Varuna (with board, accommodation, evening meals, a private writing studio, and reimbursement of travel expenses), as well as an additional $600 towards other expenses; while the virtual fellowships will run for one week, during which participants will receive two hour-long one-on-one online sessions with a Varuna writing consultant, two online Q&A sessions with published writers (including Jock Serong and a second yet-to-be-announced guest), and facilitated networking opportunities each day.

Applications for the program are now open and close on 14 June, with in-person residencies to occur from December 2024 to May 2025, and virtual residencies to take place concurrently from 2 to 8 December 2024.
