WA Premier’s Book Awards 2024 winners announced
The winners of the 2024 Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards have been announced.
At the awards, presented on 7 June at the State Library of Western Australia, novelist Gail Jones and poet John Kinsella were inducted into the Western Australian Writers Hall of Fame. WA Premier Roger Cook congratulated Jones and Kinsella ‘for their significant achievements and lasting contributions to the Western Australian writing sector.’
The winning authors and books in each category, chosen from shortlists announced in May, are:
Western Australian Writer’s Fellowship ($60,000)
- Kylie Howarth
Premier’s Prize for Book of the Year ($15,000)
- A Better Place (Stephen Daisley, Text)
Premier’s Prize for an Emerging Writer ($15,000)
- The Map of William (Michael Thomas, Fremantle Press)
Premier’s Prize for Children’s Book of the Year ($15,000)
- Scout and the Rescue Dogs (Dianne Wolfer, Walker Books)
Daisy Utemorrah Award for Unpublished Indigenous Junior and YA Fiction ($15,000 and a publishing contract with Magabala)
- Marly and Linda Wells for ‘Dusty Tracks’.
The WA Premier’s Literary Awards recognise excellence in WA writing, while the Daisy Utemorrah Award is open to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people currently living in Australia.
