Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize 2024 shortlist announced

In the UK, the shortlist for the Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize, worth £5000 (A$9541), has been announced, reports the Bookseller.

The six titles shortlisted for the 2024 award are:

  • Martyr! (Kaveh Akbar, Picador)
  • The Ministry of Time (Kaliane Bradley, Sceptre)
  • The Silence in Between (Josie Ferguson, Transworld)
  • Mongrel (Hanako Footman, Bonnier)
  • Glorious Exploits (Ferdia Lennon, Fig Tree)
  • Greta & Valdin (Rebecca K Reilly, Hutchinson Heinemann).

Waterstones head of books Bea Carvalho said: ‘We are proud to present a shortlist of bold and playful new voices for the 2024 Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize, as chosen by booksellers. In an astonishingly strong year for fiction, which sees the return of so many beloved world-renowned novelists, it is especially pleasing to see such an exciting array of emerging voices: they are the literary stars of tomorrow. The shortlisted authors stood out for their assured, confident storytelling and the unique perspectives they bring to their subjects, tackling weighty themes with sensitivity and panache.’

The winner of last year’s Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize was Alice Winn for In Memoriam (Viking).

This year’s winner will be announced on 25 July.
