Niland, McKinnon among James Beard Award winners

Fish Butchery by chef Josh Niland (Hardie Grant) and Tenderheart: A cookbook about vegetables and unbreakable family bonds by Hetty Lui McKinnon (Plum) are among the winners of the 2024 James Beard Awards.

Niland, who has won three previous James Beard Awards, received the award in the restaurant and professional category, which is for a book ‘written by a culinary professional or restaurant chef with recipes that may include advanced cooking techniques, the use of specialty ingredients and professional equipment, including culinary arts textbooks’.

McKinnon, who has previously been a finalist for the awards, received the award in the vegetable-focused cooking category, for ‘books on vegetable cookery with recipes that are meatless, vegetarian, or vegan’.

The James Beard Awards recognise culinary achievement by individual chefs and restaurants, as well as in areas such as food reporting and publishing. Winners were also announced in book categories including baking and desserts, literary writing and food issues and advocacy. More information, and the full list of 2024 winners, is available on the award website.
