Readings New Australian Fiction Prize 2024 shortlist announced

Readings has announced the shortlist for the 2024 Readings New Australian Fiction Prize.

This year’s six shortlisted books are:

  • Thanks for Having Me (Emma Darragh, Joan)
  • Ghost Cities (Siang Lu, UQP)
  • No Church in the Wild (Murray Middleton, Picador)
  • Salt River Road (Molly Schmidt, Fremantle)
  • The Opposite of Success (Eleanor Elliott Thomas, Text)
  • But the Girl (Jessica Zhan Mei Yu, Hamish Hamilton).

First established in 2014, the Readings Prize aims to ‘support and champion new and outstanding Australian voices’. The winners in each of the children’s, YA and new Australian fiction categories will be announced at an event on 22 October, with each winner to receive $5000. The Gab Williams Prize, judged by the Readings Teen Advisory Board from the YA shortlist, will be announced on 29 October, with the winner to receive $1000.

Last year’s winner of the Readings New Australian Fiction Prize was Tracey Lien for All That’s Left Unsaid (HQ).

The shortlists for the Readings Children’s Book Prize and the Readings Young Adult Prize were announced earlier this month.
