SLQ calls for black&write! publisher EOIs

The State Library of Queensland (SLQ) has called for proposals from Australian publishers to partner with the organisation in delivering the black&write! project for 2025.

SLQ said it is calling for ‘innovative proposals for a publishing partner to collaborate’. ‘We would love to hear your diverse and innovative ideas that support the growth and development of black&write! into the future, including career development for our publishing professionals and strong outcomes for First Nations writers.’

Black&write! is a program of writing fellowships and editing internships for First Nations creators. It has been running through the library since 2011.

Each year, the program’s $15,000 writing fellowships are offered to two Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander writers through a national competition for unpublished adult, YA and children’s fiction and poetry manuscripts. Alongside these fellowships, the First Nations editor training program provides mentorship for trainee editors to work with the writing fellows to develop their manuscripts.

The organisation is accepting expressions of interest from local publishers until 16 September.

Hachette Australia partnered with SLQ in 2016 for their annual black&write! writing fellowships and editorial internships, extending the partnership into 2024. Prior to Hachette, Magabala was the inaugural publishing partner for the program when it was established in 2011.
