Selected from shortlists announced last month, this year’s winners were announced at the BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival, which ran late last week.

The Danger Awards recognise books featuring Australia as a setting for stories about crime and justice. The 2024 winners each received a trophy and $1000.

Festival chair Sue Turnbull said of this year’s awards: ‘Australian crime writing is on a roll as the many entries for this year’s Danger Awards reveal. The outstanding books by all four winners reflect not only a strong sense of place but also the vivid real and imagined characters who inhabit Australian cities and landscapes.

‘What these books also highlight are the social justice issues of the day, the things to which we need to pay attention, while also enjoying a great read in an ever-evolving genre that continues to surprise in its inventiveness.’

Last year’s winners included Chris Hammer for The Tilt (A&U), Matthew Spencer for Black River (A&U), Jonathan Butler for The Boy in the Dress (Affirm) and Rachel Franks for An Uncommon Hangman (NewSouth).

More information about the awards is available on the festival website.
