Said judges Barrie Cassidy, Laura Tingle and John Warhurst: ‘This year’s entries covered the spectrum of issues that have engulfed politics in the past twelve months, as well as issues which continue to resonate in Australia over our much longer history and significant biographical works … This year’s longlist reflects all these trends with books covering foreign policy complexities and, for the first time, two significant contributions on the issue of housing which has become such an urgent, yet intractable, policy debate and political crisis.’

Introduced in 2022 by Hill of Content bookshop, the award recognises the books the judges believe ‘provide the most compelling contribution to understanding Australian political events and debates’.

The shortlist will be announced on 30 October, with each shortlisted author receiving $1000 in prize money, and the winner will be announced on 20 November, with the winning author receiving $15,000 in prize money.

Last year’s prize was awarded to Niki Savva for her book Bulldozed (Scribe).

More information is available on the prize website.
