Nix wins best novel at 2024 Ditmar Awards

The winners of the 2024 Ditmar Awards were announced on 7 October, as part of the Australian national science fiction convention ‘Conflux 18’ in Canberra.

The winning works include:

Best novel

  • The Sinister Booksellers of Bath (Garth Nix, A&U)

Best novella or novelette

  • ‘Bitters’ in Bitters (Kaaron Warren, Cemetery Dance Publications)

Best short story

  • ‘Jimmy Flip Brings His Little One to Work, and It Comes My Turn to Hold It’ in Body of Work (C H Pearce, CSFG)

Best collected work

  • The Measure of Sorrow: Stories (J Ashley-Smith, Meerkat Press)

Best artwork

  • Meg Wright (Red Wallflower) for cover art of Midnight Echo 18 (ed by J S Breukelaar, Alan Baxter)

William Atheling Jr Award for Criticism or Review

  • A Vindication of Monsters: Essays on Mary Shelley and Mary Wollstonecraft (ed by Claire Fitzpatrick, IFWG Publishing).

In the fan creation categories, Leigh Edmonds was awarded best fan writer, while C H Pearce was honoured as best fan artist, and the Let the Cat In podcast (Aaron Dries, Aaron Warren & J Ashley-Smith) received the award for best fan publication in any medium. Pearce was also honoured as best new talent.

The Ditmar Awards have been awarded annually since 1969. The awards recognise achievement in Australian science fiction, fantasy, and horror writing, as well as publishing, artwork, and fan works in these genres. Winners were selected from a preliminary ballot announced in September. Among last year’s winners was 36 Streets (T R Napper, Titan) as best novel.
