Whitley Awards 2024 winners announced

Royal Zoological Society of NSW has announced the winners of the 2024 Whitley Awards, presented for outstanding publications that profile the unique wildlife of the Australasian region.

The Whitley Medal, presented to an outstanding title in any category, was awarded to Mammals of the South-west Pacific (Tyrone Lavery & Tim Flannery, CSIRO Publishing), with the book Australian Jewel Beetles: An Introduction to the Buprestidae (Geoff Williams, Kevin Mitchell & Allen M Sundholm, CSIRO Publishing) noted as a highly commended title.

Winners in all categories were:

Children’s Investigative Zoology

  • Sensational Australian Animals (Stephanie Owen Reeder, illus by Cher Hart, CSIRO Publishing)

Children’s Conservation Awareness

  • Seed to Sky (Pamela Freeman, illus by Liz Anelli, Walker Books)

Best Field Guide

  • Field Guide to the Reptiles of the Northern Territory (Chris Jolly, Brendan Schembri & Stewart Macdonald, CSIRO Publishing)

Natural History

  • Tasmanian Mayflies: Identification, Ecology, Behaviour and Imitation (Ron Thresher, CSIRO Publishing)

Regional Field Guide

  • Wildlife of Victoria’s South-West (Grant Palmer & Jules Farquhar, CSIRO Publishing)

Illustrated Zoology and Biodiversity Resource

  • Six-legged Ghosts: The Insects of Aotearoa (Lily Duval, Canterbury University Press)

Special commendation

  • Patrica Hutchings for outstanding contributions to invertebrate zoology publication particularly in the field of marine conservation.
