Australian, Aotearoa New Zealand titles on 2024 White Ravens list
Several books by Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand authors have been included in the 2024 White Ravens list for international children’s and youth literature.
Among the works listed in 2024 are the following Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand titles:
- I Am the Mau & Other Stories (Chemutai Glasheen, Fremantle) (Australia)
- Leaf-light: A Story About Caring for Each Other (Trace Balla, A&U) (Australia)
- NT Mob Sharing Stories in Language (compiled by language teams in Murrinhpatha, Kunwinjku, Djambarrpuyngu, Anindilyakwa, Wubuy, Kriol, Warumungu, Arrernte, and Warlpiri, with translations in English, ed by Bill Forshaw, ILF) (Australia)
- The Other Brother (Jax Calder, OneTree House) (Aotearoa New Zealand)
- The Weaver (Malanie Kanicky, MidnightSun) (Australia)
- Who’s Afraid of the Light? (Anna McGregor, Scribble) (Australia).
The White Ravens catalogue is produced annually by the International Youth Library (IYL) in Munich, Germany. The 2024 catalogue features 216 titles from 62 countries around the world. The catalogue can be viewed on the IYL website.
Said IYL director Christiane Raabe: ‘The books in this unique selection cover a wide range of voices. Its international character is the result of the efforts of some twenty children’s and young adult book experts. The library’s in-house staff members in Munich cover many literary regions, and freelance readers and advisors monitor and consult on other languages and countries.’
Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) head of publishing Nicola Robinson said of an ILF title being listed: ‘This is big news in the children’s literature world and we congratulate the nine remote Communities who joined together to make NT Mob Sharing Stories in Language.’
