Stewart wins 2024 Bragg Prize

Cameron Stewart has won the 2024 UNSW Press Bragg Prize for Science Writing for the essay ‘Heroes of Zero’.

‘Heroes of Zero’ introduces readers to research by Michelle Haber and her team at the Children’s Cancer Institute, which aims to combat childhood cancer in Australia.

Stewart, associate editor at the Australian, originally published the essay in the Weekend Australian under the title ‘Childhood Cancer in Australia Will Be Conquered in a Generation, Leading Researcher Michelle Haber Says’. Judging panel member Carl Smith said the essay is ‘a story filled with hope and humanity, making it a highly deserving recipient of this year’s Bragg Prize’.

UNSW Press also awarded runner-up prizes to Dyani Lewis for ‘The World’s Oldest Story Is Flaking Away. Can Scientists Protect It?’ and Amanda Niehaus for ‘Dog People’.

All shortlisted pieces are included in the newly released anthology The Best Australian Science Writing 2024 (ed by Jackson Ryan & Carl Smith, NewSouth, November).

The annual UNSW Press Bragg Prize for Science Writing is open to short nonfiction pieces of science writing that have been written for a general audience. It is named in honour of Australia’s first Nobel laureates, William Henry Bragg and his son William Lawrence Bragg. The winner receives $7000 and runners-up each receive $1500.

Last year’s winner was Nicky Phillips for the essay ‘Trials of the Heart’.

More information about the prize is available on the UNSW Press website.
