National Book Award winners announced
In the US, the winners of the 2024 National Book Awards, worth US$10,000 (A$15,367) in each category, have been announced.
The winners in each category are:
Fiction
- James (Percival Everett, Mantle)
Nonfiction
- Soldiers and Kings: Survival and Hope in the World of Human Smuggling (Jason De León, Viking)
Poetry
- Something About Living (Lena Khalaf Tuffaha, University of Akron Press)
Translated literature
- Taiwan Travelogue (Yáng Shuāng-zǐ, trans by Lin King, Graywolf Press)
Young people’s literature
- Kareem Between (Shifa Saltagi Safadi, Putnam).
Winners in the translated literature category split the prize money evenly between author and translator.
Two lifetime achievement awards were also presented: author Barbara Kingsolver was awarded the National Book Foundation’s Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters; and Black Classic Press publisher and founder W Paul Coates receives the Foundation’s Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community.
The National Book Awards were established in 1950 to celebrate the best writing in the US. Since 1989, the Awards have been administered by the National Book Foundation. More information is available on the National Book Awards website.
