Number of publishing start-ups using AI explodes

Spines, a startup technology company founded in 2021 that published its first titles this year, is ‘offering the use of AI to proofread, produce, publish and distribute books’, reports the Bookseller.

Spines CEO and co-founder Yehuda Niv told The Bookseller he realised three years ago, while running a hybrid publisher and publishing services business, ‘that the publishing industry was about to be disrupted by this emerging technology named AI’. ‘I realised I had two options: either to be made irrelevant by AI, or to lead this opportunity in the world,’ he said.

The Bookseller reported that Spines aims to publish 8000 books in 2025 using AI. ‘Spines isn’t the only tech firm trying to make its mark on publishing,’ the publication said, citing the recent launch of Microsoft imprint, 8080 Books.

At Publishers Weekly, contributor Thad McIlroy maintains the publication’s database of publishing start-ups. ‘Over the past two years we’ve seen the launch of approximately 320 startups, nearly all AI-related,’ said McIlroy.
