Ang appointed as Hachette x MDA Trainee

Wen Yee Ang has been appointed as the inaugural Hachette x Media Diversity Australia (MDA) Trainee.

Launched in August, the traineeship was created ‘to promote diversity and inclusivity within the publishing industry,’ offering a two-year entry-level role for a candidate selected through MDA’s TalentHub.

Hachette Australia publishing director Joel Naoum said: ‘We received an overwhelming number of high-quality applications for the inaugural Hachette x MDA Traineeship. Wen Yee was selected for her strong academic background, technical skills, and active involvement in the literary community. Her roles at the Odyssey Literary Festival and Visible Ink via RMIT particularly stood out during the selection process.’

‘During her two-year, full-time traineeship, Ang will gain valuable hands-on experience across multiple areas of the publishing industry, with mentorship both within Hachette and through external guidance provided by MDA,’ said Hachette.

Ang said: ‘I greatly admire Hachette Australia’s commitment to championing inclusivity for all voices in Australian publishing, especially in young adult and children’s fiction. Books and reading have always been an essential part of my life, and it would be deeply meaningful for me to bring diverse Australian stories to the next generation of readers.’

MDA CEO Mariam Veiszadeh said: ‘We are delighted with the success of our partnership with Hachette Australia, which has led to the exceptional outcome with the selection of our candidate. This collaboration has reinforced our shared commitment to building a more diverse and inclusive publishing industry.’

Ang will commence in her role on 28 January 2025.
