CLNZ Contestable Fund Grants 2024 recipients announced

Copyright Licensing New Zealand (CLNZ) has announced recipients of its Contestable Fund Grants, totalling NZ$75,000.

The recipients are:

  • Georgina Tuari Stewart (NZ$8220): for the publishing project ‘Ngā Kararehe o Aotearoa—he Mātauranga, he Matatika, development of te reo Māori science education resources’
  • Objectspace (NZ$8000): for the writing and publishing project ‘Oceanic Routes: Mike Austin and Pacific Architecture’
  • Mila’s Books (NZ$7500): for the writing and publishing project Mila’s Books Tusitala Mentoring Programme 2025
  • Saraid de Silva (NZ$7500): for a second novel
  • Kotahi Rau Pukapuka Trust (NZ$7040): for the editing project ‘Wānanga Whakapakari Kanohi Hōmiromiro, editing te reo Māori manuscripts’
  • Oratia Books (NZ$5300): for the publishing project ‘Moana Oceania: Niue’
  • The Coalition for Books Strategy (NZ$5000): for the project ‘Aotearoa Book Sector Plan 2030’
  • Michael King Writers Centre (NZ$5000): for a ‘stipend for writer Dominic Hoey whilst attending a residency to work on his fourth book’
  • Laura Shallcrass (NZ$5000): for the graphic novel ‘Petal and the Luckish’ (working title), for children 6–12 years
  • SpecFicNZ Awards (NZ$5000): for the ‘creation of a new juried award, associated annual celebration and award website to lift the profile of New Zealand and Pasifika speculative fiction in Aotearoa and beyond’
  • Minarets Journal, edited by Nirvana Haldar (NZ$4000): for the publishing project ‘Special issue connecting poetry from Aotearoa and South Asia’
  • Āporo Press (NZ$3500): for the publishing project ‘Māori Made Difficult x Hinting at Decolonisation’
  • Nelson Festivals Trust Literacy (NZ$3400): for the 2024 Nelson Arts Festival Pukapuka Talks podcasts.

The Contestable Fund is part of CLNZ’s Cultural Fund, which derives revenue from CLNZ’s licensing activity in New Zealand. The Cultural Fund supports ‘people and projects that encourage the development of current and future writers, publishers and educators’.
