MUD Literary Prize 2025 shortlist announced

The shortlist for the 2025 MUD Literary Prize, worth $10,000, has been announced.

The shortlisted works, selected from 31 submissions, are:

  • Translations (Jumaana Abdu, Vintage)
  • The End and Everything Before It (Finegan Kruckemeyer, Text)
  • The Degenerates (Raeden Richardson, Text)
  • Why Do Horses Run? (Cameron Stewart, A&U).

The prize is awarded to the best debut literary novel by an Australian writer, and is open to all Australian writers who have published their first literary novel in the calendar year preceding Adelaide Writers’ Week (AWW), which this year runs 1–6 March.

Louise Adler, director of AWW and member of the judging panel, said on behalf of the judges: ‘As readers of these novels, we are taken from rural Australia, to the backstreets of Mumbai, and then to the Arctic seas, across a large canvas of experiences and remarkable characters. This astonishing variety is indicative of the richness of writing in Australia today.’

The winner will be announced in the week before AWW commences, and will appear in an AWW interview session on Monday 3 March.

More information about the prize can be found on the prize website.
