September’s Independent Publishing newsletter

Welcome to the September issue of Books+Publishing’s monthly Independent Publishing newsletter.

As I mentioned in last month’s newsletter, self-published authors are often curious about how they can get their titles on bookshop shelves.

As well as re-publishing another article sharing the point of view of booksellers on this topic, I also want to draw your attention to a document published by New Zealand’s Twizel Bookshop. In her consignment sheet for self-published authors, owner Renée Rowland provides a guide to what an author can expect when her shop agrees to stock their book, and, in return, what is expected or required of the participating author. While different shops will have different policies, it’s well worth familiarising yourself with the standards and requirements that will be expected of you if you want to stock your title in a shop.

Also below is the third and final instalment in a series on social media—this one on scheduling—from Rachael McDiarmid, director of RM Marketing Services. As Rachael says, social media can be a daunting topic for some authors; throughout the series she has demystified the process and shared helpful tips to encourage even the most reluctant first-timers.

Happy reading (and writing)!
