2023 UK Selfies Award winners
In the UK, trade publication Book Brunch announced the winners of the Selfies Book Awards, which recognise the best self-published adult fiction, children’s and memoir and autobiography titles, at an event at the London Book Fair.
Halima Khatun won the adult fiction category for The Secret Diary of a Bengali Newlywed, with judges praising the book as ‘fun and readable, with an entertaining voice that made me laugh out loud at times’, and noting Khatun made ‘effective use of TikTok to market the book’.
The best children’s title was awarded to When I Grow Up (Rich Smith, illus by Stuart Hinchliff), a ‘lovely, rhyming, engaging’ book, according to judges, who noted the book’s ‘great sales’.
Sarah Ziegel took home the memoir/autobiography category for Marching to a Different Beat: A family’s journey with autism, which displayed ‘good, evocative writing … with a strong, commercial cover’.

Booklife Prize for Nonfiction finalists
BookLife and Publishers Weekly have announced the four finalists for the Booklife Prize for Nonfiction, worth $5000.
The BookLife Prize is an annual writing competition in two contests (fiction and nonfiction) sponsored by BookLife and Publishers Weekly. It seeks to support independent authors and discover great written works in nine categories across the two sections.
The four nonfiction titles, chosen as the winners of their respective contest categories, are:
Business/personal finance
- Authentic Leadership: Embracing Your Archetypal Gifts (Angie McCourt)
Inspirational/spiritual
- Acts of Compassion (Linda and Michael Spangle)
Memoir/autobiography
- Boundless: An Abortion Doctor Becomes a Mother (Christine Henneberg)
Self-Help/Relationships
- Outside Mental Health: Voices and Visions of Madness (Will Hall)

Other awards news
There has been a string of local awards announcements over the past month, including the shortlists for the CBCA Awards, the Age Book of the Year, the Stella Prize, ABIAs, the Australian Book Design Awards and the Book People Book of the Year.
Walker Books has also established a new biennial manuscript prize. The award is unpublished manuscript, containing 5000 to 80,000 words, written for a readership of five years and older, and suitable for formats of junior, middle-grade or YA fiction.
