Alison Croggon, award-winning novelist, poet, librettist and critic, self-published a collection of poetry, New and Selected Poems 1991-2017, in August 2017. Croggon spoke with Independent Publishing about her decision to move from traditional publishing to being a ‘hybrid author’, the advantages of self-publishing and her publishing plans for next year.

Describe your latest book in under 50 words.

My most recent book, my first go at self-publishing, is New and Selected Poems 1991-2017. Which is what it says on the tin. In June 2018 I’m bringing out Fleshers, a dystopian science-fiction novel I co-wrote with Daniel Keene.

Why self-publish?

Up to this year I’ve been a traditionally published author, although as a critic and poet I’ve often self-published onlineI ran a review blog for eight years and also a literary magazine for Masthead. Over the past five years I started getting depressed about the limitations of traditional publishing: a lot has changed, including advances. I write in a lot of genres, and hate repeating myself, and publishers are often averse to writers shape shifting. So I began to look at self-publishing, and in particular the economics, and considered a move to being a hybrid author. Basically, I thought, why not?

I had a trial run with the New and Selected Poems, which came out in August this year. Making that book was one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever done. Fleshers will be my first attempt at a commercial book. I was reluctant to traditionally publish with this one, because we’re hoping it will be a series, and I’ve heard too many horror stories of book one in a series doing badly in traditional publishing and the series consequently being cancelled, which leaves the writer hanging. So, it actually seems less of a gamble to self-publish.

What year did you start and where are you based?

I started self-publishing this year, and I’m based in Melbourne.

How many people did you contract on your book and what did you do yourself?

For the New and Selected Poems I did everything: page and cover design (I exercised maternal rights and asked my daughter Zoe Croggon if I could use one of her artworks for the cover image). For Fleshers, we’ve commissioned a designer for the covers, and arranged with another self-publishing author to swap proofing duties. We’re doing copy edits right now and, in future, I’m hoping we can afford to employ a copy editorit’s the most laborious part of the process, aside from the actual first draft.

What makes your book unique?

New and Selected Poems allowed me total control over the book. It includes poetry from all my previous books, but for the first time I could edit and arrange entirely to my satisfaction. I think it made a great difference.

What has been your biggest success?

In self-publishing? My single book so far, I think!

What has been your biggest challenge?

Coming to terms with marketing. It’s a steep learning curve, but I’m learning.

What would be top tip for those starting out in self-publishing?

Research, research, research. And find a community to work with. It can be lonely out there!

What will you publish next?

As I said, in June 2018 I’ll be launching Fleshers, the first book in the ‘Newport City’ series. Pinkers, book two, is planned for September 2018. We hope.

Why do I need a barcode?

The assignment of a unique ISBN (International Standard Book Number) to each title is often a requirement for selling your titles through major retailers as well as other wholesalers and distributors. Booksellers prefer to use a machine readable or scannable version of that number in their systems for processing print book sales. The Bookland EAN symbol is the most widely used barcode format in the publishing industry as it encodes the ISBN. Barcodes can also be encoded with the book price by the retailer. You can purchase industry standard barcodes on the MyIdentifiers website.

Do I need a barcode or ISBN for my ebook?

It is recommended that each format of your ebook (e.g. Mobi, EPub) has its own ISBN attached. However, you do not need a barcode for ebooks. Barcodes are placed on printed publications which can then be scanned at the point of sale.

Do I need an e-ISBN for my ebooks?

There is no such thing as an e-ISBN. Regular ISBNs can be used for various publication formats, such as ebooks, printed books, audio books, or DVDs.

My login is not working for MyIdentifiers. What should I do?

It is best to email us at myidentifiers@thorpe.com.au always quoting your Publisher name as well as Username (usually your email) and an existing ISBN if you have one. We will endeavour to reply within 24 hours. Alternatively, you can phone us at (03) 8517-8349 and when leaving a message please quote the above details. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

How can I retrieve some old ISBNs I purchased years ago?

You can do this by creating a login (account) on the MyIdentifiers website.  Click on the register button at the top right-hand corner of our homepage. Click the ‘I have previously purchased ISBNs from Bowker’ button to open the ‘Find Me’ page. Use the Search fields to locate your existing publisher record.  It is most effective to search by using one of your existing 13 digit ISBNs. Once your Publisher field is found, select the Publisher name then address (don’t try to correct the address if it is out of date – you can do this once you have created your account from the ‘My Profile Data’ tab). Create your login on the registration page and make a note of it. You will then be able to login to your MyIdentifiers account and click on the My Account > Manage ISBNs to view and use any available existing ISBNs you may hold. There is no payment involved for this process.

If you are unable to locate your existing ISBN list call us on (03) 8517-8349 quoting your old ISBN as reference. It will help to expedite your query.

The ISBN agency will be closed from midday 22 December 2017 to 2 January 2018. However, you can purchase ISBNs, barcodes and other self-publisher products and services via the MyIdentifiers website 24/7.
